Toy Story 3 Used As Lure To Access Bogus Software And Survey Sites

Security Company Sunbelt Software is cautioning Web users of scam artists who are exploiting Toy Story 3, its latest episode released recently, as bait for victims to get them to pop-up security application scams or phony survey websites. ESecurity Planet published this in news on July 22, 2010.

Apparently, the phony websites present absolute, hot media downloads pertaining to Woody and Buzz's latest adventures, the names of the key characters of the Toy Story series. But the sites in reality divert the unwary onto potentially malicious as well as time-wasted content. The scam even offers games related to Toy Story 3.

An extremely popular trick the scam artists employ is the advertisement of the 'complete film' through YouTube, however, it actually takes the visitor onto several survey websites. In addition, a few of the total websites also trick visitors into downloading malicious executables, while the rest divert them onto scandalous movie sites. With this particularly nasty ruse, many end-users particularly children are likely to be drawn towards the earlier fake promise.

What's more, a lot of the websites further tout the movie's online editions as also appear to utilize ad networks of the porn kind.

State the security researchers, the above scams were all triggered off the wegotbest.com website. In the process pop-ups emerged from the Flash Player as also the website ejected gambling ads. Ultimately, following a ten-minute period of inactivity, the site threw up one questionnaire.

Here security researcher Chris Boyd at Sunbelt Software admonishes that just like an earlier similar scam that involved the 'Doctor Who' serial, the current scam also deceives unsuspecting Web-surfers into filling out dubious surveys in return for nothing whatsoever. The Register published this in news on July 20, 2010.

According to the security researcher, the said kinds of surveys are a continuation of the adware menace.

Thus, he says, users must avoid websites that direct to deploy software to obtain the Toy Story movie or game. Similarly they must also avoid any promises made on YouTube that sound unbelievably true, Boyd advises. Sunbelt BLOG published this in news on July 20, 2010.
