Asia - Leading Region in the World for Distributing Spam

According to Kaspersky Lab's spam report for the second quarter of 2010, Asia still hold the number one place across the world in terms of spam distribution.

Asian countries were responsible for 40.5% of total spam in April 2010 though the figure decreased to some extent later. In the period between April and June 2010, Asian countries accounted for the distribution of 32.8% of total spam volume - a little more than 31.7% sent from this region in Q1 of the year.

Meantime, there was a large amount of illegal correspondence sent from Latin America. As a matter of fact, many people know that South America sent 15% of spam in 2009, which fell to 10.5% in Q1 of 2010. But Q2 total exceeded not only Q1 2010 but complete 2009, with 16.3% of total spam originating from Latin America.

In fact, the report also included a country wise analysis. As per the report, the USA led this quarter (Q2 2010) with 15% of the total spam originated from there. India remained at the second place with 8.5%.

Vietnam climbed the report two places and secured the third place. However, a lot of jockeying happened for the position during the quarter. The month of April witnessed the USA, India and Vietnam competing neck to neck with 12.3%, 11.7% and 11.6% respectively. On the other hand, the USA won the race in May with 20.8% of all spam.

The list of Top 10 spam sources also included Italy (3.3%) and Spain (2.8%). However, these two countries ranked 14th and 15th respectively on the chart last quarter. In addition, the unintended communication from Latin America increased 16.3% of the total spam content.

The security firm states that during the second quarter of 2010, spam contribution from countries in Asia and Latin America accounted for over half of all spam traffic. Earlier, it was noted by the security firm that there was a shift in the sources of spam to these regions. But at present, some certainty is seen and this trend will remain in the future.
