Public Cautioned of Rugby World Cup Scam

The anti-spam Compliance Unit (ASCU) of the Department of Internal Affairs has issued an alert for the public that they should remain watchful while viewing e-mails as the 2011 Rugby World Cup draws near. Infonews.co.nz reported this on July 22, 2011.

Stated Toni Demetriou Senior Investigator, the department feels anxious that cyber-criminals might influence people just like they did during the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as other important international events that were so attractive to them since the criminals could capitalize on those occasions over the Internet in several manners. Stuff.co.nz published this on July 22, 2011.

Mr. Demetriou contented that the 2011 Rugby World Cup wasn't any exception. For, there had by now been electronic mails telling recipients that they were the winners of $1m during one lottery promotion that the 2011 Rugby World Cup's governing body supposedly operated. In truth, there was no prize money, while the Rugby World Cup organizers hadn't sent the e-mail either.

Demetrious further stated that the e-mail in reality was a scam created for deceiving recipients into providing personal information as well as money to the fraudsters.

According to him, Internet users will have to remain cautious with any incoming junk e-mail. That's because scammers and spammers are widely able to exploit official sponsorship as well as corporate branding associated with the latest Rugby World Cup sporting occasion towards influencing e-mail recipients into trusting the communications reaching them are genuine in connection with promotion and marketing of the event.

Moreover, Demetrious warned that people receiving the e-mail could have their PCs subsequently diverted onto a website harbored in some foreign country while it delivered a virus, Trojan or other malware.

Meanwhile, the ASCU as well reminds enterprises and organizations for making sure they abide by the 2007 Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act while promoting and marketing services and products via commercial e-mails.

Finally, it's essential that all enterprises and organizations gather recipients' permission to allow the delivery of marketing e-mails as also likewise commercial e-mails. And incase anyone wishes to report unsolicited e-mails or spam he can get in touch with the ASCU.
