Countries with Responsible ISPs have Lower Malware Infections; Microsoft
As per a report by PCWorld dated August 28, 2011, an analysis by Microsoft reveals that countries having efficient CERTs meaning teams for national security, and industrious ISPs tend to display less malware contaminations repeatedly compared to those which maintain a security approach of less paternalistic form.
The company's popularly utilized MSRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool) drew certain statistical data according to which, the nations with significantly less number of malware infections are Japan, Germany, Austria and Finland.
Utilizing a measuring standard namely CCM (computers cleaned every mile), it was found that in Austria this rate was an ordinary 3.3 CCM during Q4-2010, while in Germany it was 5.3 and in Japan and Finland -2.3 each, all considerably less than the worldwide mean of 8.3 covering 116 countries. Encouragingly, these figures, since 2007 when the first computations were done, have remained steadily low.
According to the researchers, Austria, Germany, Japan and Finland appeared opposed to Korea, which had the maximum rate of malware contamination of 40.3 CCM during Q4-2010.
Meanwhile, Tim Rains of Microsoft discovered certain reasons explaining why the contamination rates from malware were low. First, according to him, was attributed to a firm interconnection among private and public entities, which resulted in proactive and efficient handling of malware threats. Second, the malware monitoring functioning of ISPs, CERTs along with other entities facilitated quick response. Third, the presence of a well-trained and clever Information Technology culture enabled system administrators towards tackling e-threats sufficiently.
In addition, the newly set up policies and procedures for isolating contaminated PCs as also stopping the dissemination of malware across networks as well as media coverage and awareness schemes related to security problems too had been helpful.
Finally, Rains regards lower levels of software piracy along with extensive and well-timed utilization of Microsoft and Windows Updates as the ultimate reason related to diminished rates of malware infection.
Importantly, within the 4 countries mentioned above, the ISPs there are extremely effective towards keeping watch over traffic from spam-botnets, immediately getting in touch with users understood as infected or even disconnecting them till the time a solution to the problem is found.
