Movie Maker Duped, Purchases Malware Loaded Damaged Hard Drive

Movie maker Darryl Manson based in Sydney was directing a film on The Angels, a rock band when to his shock the just bought hard drive namely Seagate of 1.5 terabyte he obtained from Dick Smith the retailer, turned out to be corrupted. Softpedia.com published this, December 23, 2011.

The portable device cost Manson $129, as per the label, however, on fitting it onto the laptop he used, it became evident that the hard drive actually had a storage capacity of 30GB, with the greater part of it already containing counterfeit films like Toy Story.

Consequently, Manson instantly began posting tweets regarding Smith's treatment of the product so that when the retail outlet's people read them, they sent a person with one new hard drive to Manson's residence.

Disturbingly, the first hard drive caused hostile PC-viruses to contaminate Mason's system that subsequently corrupted a few video files among the several he had stored in connection with the film. Manson emphasizes that the viruses hadn't come from any other source as his laptop wasn't linked up with the Internet as well as he never fixed anything onto it other than the video-camera he used.

Fascinatingly, Anthony Roberts Fair Trading Minister of New South Wales became interested about the practice and stated that selling products that had been given back, as though they were fresh, without indicating so, infringed upon Australian law, published Coomaexpress.com.au dated December 22, 2011.

According to a Spokesman of Fair Trading, NSW, retail merchants misguiding buyers regarding their products' or services' characteristics could be fined $1.1m at the maximum per crime, whereas buyers could demand re-imbursement following losses thereof. He stated that affected consumers similar to Darryl Manson must contact Fair Trading. Brisbanetimes.com.au reported this on December 22, 2011.

Moreover, Spokeswoman Ingrid Just representing Choice a consumer syndicate stated that it was essential to make disclosures when dealing with refurbished goods. Further, while considering refurbished technology, certain probable privacy problems prevailed incase details weren't erased from the labels, save alone the probability of the consumer's software/hardware getting corrupted owing to the malware, she added. Sytech-consultants.com reported this on December 22, 2011.
