BCSO Cautions Residents about Bogus FedEx-Spoofed E-mails

Panama City, Florida (USA)-based Office of Bay County Sheriff (BCSO) has issued an alert to the general public for carefully handling any e-mail that claims as being sent from FedEx, globally known as the elite shipment delivery firm, published The News Herald dated June 19, 2013.

Spoofed as a FedEx e-mail, the scam message wrongly writes the business' name as Fed;Ex. It then notifies the e-mail reader that certain parcel had failed to get delivered, so needs to be collected from any Fed;Ex Office preferably the nearest one. To make the collection, it only requires of the user for taking a print-out of the shipment tag given as an attachment as also bringing it along.

But, if the user prints the tag, he'll get infected with malware on his system. The virus seizes the victim's financial along with other personal information to accomplish the objective of ID-theft, BCSO Officers outline.

In the meantime, FedEx disclaiming any association with the spam scheme, posted online to alert people about the fake e-mails masquerading as FedEx and informing about certain parcel, which couldn't be handed over. The messages encouraged recipients for viewing a given attachment so they might subsequently collect the impending parcel. But, the said kind of attachment triggered off a virus, the shipment delivery firm observed.

The firm further wrote that the mentioned fake e-mails were actually sent from unauthorized 3rd-parties having nothing to do with FedEx. Anytime e-mails were sent from FedEx carrying tracking details to collect parcels not delivered, the company didn't ever include attachments.

Therefore, incase anybody gets a bogus FedEx e-mail like the one mentioned above, alternatively any likewise e-mail posing as being sent from any other shipment delivery firm, he mustn't view its attachment.
