Malaysia among Top Ten Banking Malware Infested Countries for Q1-2014, Reports Trend Micro

People in Malaysia are heavily in danger of Internet banking malware since the Security Company Trend Micro's study of online crime showed the country as one of the globally ten extremely impacted nations, published manage.mmail.com.my, June 18, 2014.

Inside Malaysia, as users of tablets and smartphones are on the rise, there has been considerable growth in Internet banking over the last few years.

Threat researchers at Trend Micro discovered that bank info-stealing malicious programs kept on thriving while fresh malware families emerged after the old getting modified, each attacking separate targets as also bearing various anti-detection tactics.

Malaysia's Ministry of Finance disclosed that Internet banking had a penetration rate nearly 50% of the nation's total number of people, with 14.3m separate consumers over and above 300,000 entrepreneurial consumers, starting June 2013.

In the current quarter, Q1-2014, there has been a significant drop in total incidences of banking malware compared to 2013-end, whereas in 2013, large numbers of incidences were detected, accountable to the year-end vacation time, the period of highest monitoring over Internet shoppers by cyber-criminals.

Telling more about the study's discoveries, Regional Consulting Director Victor Lo for South-East Asia at Trend Micro stated that bank info-stealing malicious programs were exploring ever newer methods. Referring to trends ongoing within Brazil, for instance, the Director stated there was an increase in malevolent Control Panel files (.CPL files) catering to Microsoft Windows implanted within Rich Text Format (.RTF) files within the nation-state. Themalaymailonline.com reported this, June 19, 2014.

According to Lo, there was an increased change from conventional delivery modes wherein RAR or ZIP files were attached.

Moreover, the study indicates that USA encountered 23% of the total Internet banking malware assaults in Q1-2014. Unsurprisingly, it (USA) has been most widely targeted where over 26,000 bank info-stealing malware incidences occurred.

Following USA were nations such as Japan at 10%, India -9%, Brazil -7%, Turkey -4%, and Mexico, Malaysia, France, Australia and Vietnam each at 3%.

Conclusively, the report suggests online bankers towards ensuring they've anti-malware/anti-virus solutions running on their systems, while also visiting their bank A/Cs through direct access as well as eschewing opening dubious e-mails.
