Internet-Based Cloud Services Widely Used for Piracy

Researchers from twin groups -British NetName and American Digital Citizen Alliance that strive to maintain Internet security as well as fraud protection- recently opined that Cloud Services, which people use for taking down unauthorized software, music and movies, have become an area for piracy while frequently contract end-users with malware. Such cloud storage facilities have another name viz. cyberlockers, published myce.com dated September 19, 2014.

The researchers who published a study, "Behind The Cyberlocker Door: A Report How Shadowy Cyberlockers Use Credit Card Companies to Make Millions" explain in it that end-users upload their material of choice which Web-surfers accessing the particular site take down or stream, not knowing the person actually behind the uploaded content or if it's stolen (which normally is the case).

Cyberlockers let just anybody to post material that others can stream else download, implying that the filched material getting posted onto a cyberlocker may have malware/adware/spyware, cautions the Alliance. There's also insufficient amount of own knowledge of these website such as the type of files getting streamed else uploaded onto them, thus increasing the difficulty in making them accountable.

The Alliance further cautions that pulling down illegal content endangers end-users of cyberlockers with getting contaminated with malicious software else getting victimized with ID-theft - an issue which particularly endangers children.

Moreover, just by pulling down illegal content else streaming it from malicious cyberlockers, end-users harm themselves while holding accountable the Internet's deterioration to moving from a zone which's secure and comfortable onto another where crooks stay hidden within the grey areas reaping enormous wealth off the users' material and creations.

A total of thirty cloud-based "cyberlockers" were identified that operate worldwide as well as are hosted within different places globally, and that churn approximately $96m in yearly earnings, the study notes.

Since most cyberlockers allow MasterCard and Visa payment cards for paying them, these credit card firms could pose difficulty for the cyberlockers via not anymore accepting their monetary dealings.

Eventually, though the cyberlockers rely on proxy servers for keeping their locations hidden, still the researchers were able to find them via locating their servers inside Switzerland, Holland, USA and others.
