New Spam Email Campaign Exploiting the Name of FedEx - Experts

Softpedia.com reported on 7th April, 2015 stating that security experts have recently spotted a spam email campaign which is targeting FedEx, a renowned courier delivery company based in headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee (US).

The scammers depend on the subject line only which reads: 'FedEx Document 694316328970' to trick at least some recipients to open the attached file.

The content of the email is very simple which says nothing except a short message asking people to help the environment by not taking the print.

However, some recipients, because of curiosity or may be expecting any news from a FedEx delivery will probably proceed and click on the attached .zip file to see the content of the 'FedEx Document'.

But sadly, the .zip file does not contain any FedEx document and instead contains a computer Trojan which if installed, it can download and install more malware on the victim's computer.

The fake email can easily trick you down especially if you are busy and tired, say security experts.

FedEx or any other professional company will never send out vague alerts. A genuine message from the company will address the recipient by his/her name and most of the time content of the message will sound authenticity and not vague, which is the case in the above email.

Besides these indications, if the message claims to deliver only one text document and does not look like a large one, then the attached archives must be considered as suspicious.

It is not always good to see the data without any restrictions. Experts add that cybercriminals can implant malicious scripts in Word documents and send them to users without compressing them.

Therefore, if you receive such email with an attachment, never open the attachment or click on any link enclosed in such email.

Moreover, it is not just the companies but also government regulated delivery bodies have been exploited by scammers in their online scams. For example: Canada Post recently issued a warning against a sophisticated scam which was imitating its email and branding. The email informed the users that delivery could not be done and asked the recipient to click on a link to receive it again.
