xHamster and other Major Porn Sites Assaulted By Massive Malware Attack - Malwarebytes

A cyber attack on a large number of adult websites, including the renowned xHamster site has been identified by security vendor Malwarebytes. The attack reportedly affects millions of users. Malwarebytes had earlier intercepted the 'malvertising' operation on search giant Yahoo! in August, routing users who clicked on maligned online promotional ads to a phishy page comprising fake accusations of criminal doings and directions to pay a penalty.

XHamster, provides free pornographic videos, along with premium payable content, is said to be world's most-renowned domains with nearly half a billion visitors on a monthly basis.

The tainted ad in question was for a dating application nicknamed Sex Messenger and designed to affect Internauts running Microsoft's internet Explorer.

Several checks are entrenched within the advertisement to confirm that the user is legitimate and is using Internet Explorer, said Jerome Segura, Senior Security Researcher at Malwarebytes, as published by ibtimes.co.uk on September 25, 2015.

Malvertising often embeds ransomware on a user's system. It loads a webpage comprising fake accusations of criminal offenses and instructions for paying a penalty.

These efforts guarantee that only authentic users will be able to see the landing page of the exploit kit thus, excluding honeypots and security researchers equally, Segura added, published by bbc.com on September 25, 2015.

Though in this particular case the advertisement was popping up so frequently that researchers were able to examine it after all.

Xhamster is presently positioned 71st most frequented website globally by web analytics business house Alexa and entices hundreds of millions of users on a monthly basis. As per Alexa web rankings, xHamster gets more visitors than other known porn websites that includes PornHub, YouPorn, RedTube, and XVideos.

However, the online pornographic industry does spend on security, Segura added.

He added that this idea exists that adult websites are more risky to visit than regular websites.

I don't think it's entirely true particularly for the top websites as they do devote a huge amount of resources in getting rid of fraud and malware.

Based on what we have witnessed in the last few months to the extent malvertising goes, we have witnessed as many up conventional publishers as pornographic ones, Segura said.
