Malware Attacks Flooded Every Friday in Third Quarter, Finds CYREN

CYREN has just published that online attackers spread malware more intensely every Friday during attempts at exploiting employees who're not so well safeguarded during the weekend, reported scmagazineuk.com dated November 6, 2015.

The most frequent day of the week when hacks and malware attacks occur on PC-networks of organizations is Monday. This is because employees download hazardous materials every Saturday and Sunday, even as they do so with unsecured networks.

During the weekend, employees use the systems brought home from office by frequently connecting them online via unsecured Wi-Fi systems that may be personal or public, while start surfing on the Web, take down material as well as follow web-links embedded on e-mails.

CYREN that assessed everyday trend of malware distribution in July-September 2015 spotted a mean of 2.25bn attachments carrying malicious software every Friday - which's over triple the figure observed on every Monday in the same period.

Security analysts at CYREN feel this may carry over to the long run during when cyber-crooks try accumulating login data of corporations intending to sell it and/or utilize within organization hacks. The assaults may as well get used for aiming renowned web-mail services through which to access databases of organizations.

The study further shows how phishing URLs counted 4.3m during Q3-2015, accounting for a 19% decline from the previous report. CYREN states this decline indicates that such assaults are getting normal in numerical count in spite of the 30% rise seen in Q2-2015.

Moreover, spam mails declined in Q3-2015 to a mean of 52bn daily, and according to CYREN, the mean spam mails per day in September counted 47.4bn, accounting for the lowest in 6-yrs.

According to CTO Lior Kohavi at CYREN, the above most recent phishing and malware detections occurred close to the Cyber Security Awareness Month along with one new CYREN survey, which emphasizes the immense difficulty an ordinary end-user faces recognizing a threat. At the moment therefore, both enterprises and individuals must more than hitherto organize cyber-security education camps. Companies should equip staff with knowledge about ever-changing and massive types of defrauding tactics that criminals use, Kohavi adds. Securityweek.com reported this, November 6, 2015.
