Google Develops Detection of Ad Fraud Botnets

No one knows the amount ad fraud actually costs the industry annually, but everyone agrees on its existence, and agrees that one has to do something to prevent fraudsters from taking millions and billions of dollars from the advertising business every year.

The company announced in a press conference on Safer Internet Day (9th February) that their security experts made new counter-strategies to battle against three main ad fraud botnets which are spreading maximum. Google particularly recognized the Bedep botnet, which is a popular infrastructure for ad fraud driven by the Bedep click-fraud malware, and also revealed two latest and strange botnets which were nicknamed as Changthangi and Beetal by Google.

Softpedia.com posted on 9th February, 2016, stating that the company has internally assessed and estimated that the three mentioned botnets contained more than 5 Lacs infected computers, with only Bedep bringing more than 3 Lacs users during peak hours every day.

Botnets are cause of serving ads or bogus traffic, which will not be seen ever by anybody. Many malware-infected PCs are also controlled by botnets, which fraudsters operate to generate massive volume of non-human ad traffic for corrupt publishers. Subsequently, this causes lucrative ad dollars for both publishers and fraudsters. With authors of malware continuously updating their source code of the malware, Google along with all other security product is always playing a hide and seek game. If Google has really managed to put together any kind of AI to discover illegal traffic without huge human involvement, this change can affect the business of fraud ad and set it back in the coming months.

Operators of Ad fraud botnets will not lag behind for long because it will provide Google more opportunity along with time to concentrate on studying botnet infrastructures, and might come out with some better action to combat its opponents in the following round. Ad fraud bots are not normally hated much as compared to other types of malware because they mostly damage advertising networks and not end clients.

One can say that Google along with its parallel advertising stages are the only ones which are combating ad fraud botnets, and if a noteworthy exploit kit would not be distributing a click-fraud malware frequently, you would seldom hear anything from them.
