GODLESS Malicious Program Poses Danger to 90% of Android Phones


Trend Micro, which has unearthed the ANDROIDOS_GODLESS.HRX malware, details in its Security Intelligence blog the way the malicious program compromises devices and carries out sinister operations such as eavesdropping on an operator of smart-phone. Downloading any applications containing the Godless malware, Android users will have the malware starting to dig deeper into the mobile after its screen is no longer on. When the malware gains root access, there may be a possibility of unwanted software corrupting the mobile. Notably, Godless uses several rooting exploits that makes smart-phones and tablets of Android prone to attack.

The malevolent applications containing Godless appear on popular application stores like Google Play, to name one, while these have adversely impacted more than 850,000 mobiles globally, suggests data garnered from Mobile App Reputation Service of Trend Micro. Nearly 90% of worldwide distributed Android devices now operate on impacted editions.

Moreover, once Godless manages to conceal itself on an application and starts rooting the operating software on an end-user's mobile phone, the process enables it gain admin access, letting illegitimate apps to get planted. There are different exploits that makes sure the malware is able to root the phone, while plant spyware too. The latest Godless version can even circumvent security measures on Google Play and other app stores. On completion of the rooting, the malware can pose problems for uninstalling.

It isn't uncommon to find malware infecting smart-phone OSs, particularly Android. Occasionally, it is also a reason to criticize Google's platform. Nevertheless, certain exploits, like Heartbleed and Stagefright have consumers, security researchers and developers struggling. It seems the latest GODLESS malware group that Trend Micro the software security company reports is bent on making itself like those exploits, clandestinely digging deep into contaminated mobiles and causing more compromises for them.

With multiple exploits that GODLESS can use, the malware is capable of attacking literally any Android phone having the Android 5.1 i.e. Lollipop alternatively previous OS. Gadgets.ndtv.com posted this, June 23, 2016.

Trend Micro estimates that the majority of impacted end-users -46.19% is within India. Topping the list and following India are Indonesia at 10.27% and Thailand at 9.47%.
