Intel, Kaspersky and Europol Jointly Create Anti-Ransomware Portal

The European Union law enforcement agency, Europol, launches the latest scheme in collaboration with the companies of cybersecurity as well as national police forces for helping people who got infected with the ransomware. The consumers are provided information about options of data recovery and decryption keys that are known via No More Ransom Project. With the constantly growing ransomware strains, the aim of the site is spreading of awareness about best security practices, keeping backups, and to encourage victims for reporting their cases to the police.

The portal has material designed for educating users regarding ransomware threat and from where it appears, but the most prominent is its access to around 160,000 keys. These include numerous strains of ransomware; most prominent was Shade Trojan which appeared in 2014. Theinquirer.com posted on July 25th, 2016, stating that this is in particular a very nasty ransomware that is spreaded through websites and then infected the attachments in email.

Ransomware steals as well as holds the user data hostage, and then forces individuals along with companies to pay the criminals for regaining control of the data again.

Jornt Wiel, Kaspersky security researcher, said that by coughing up on demand, the ransomware victims boost underground economy, which then increases the number of attacks as well as criminals. He further added that "we can only change the situation if we coordinate our efforts to fight against ransomware".

The ransomware attacks can be reported by the users using the site of No More Ransom Project, and also they can identify the malware type which is behind locking of their files. The police expect that this site will help in disruption of the profitable ransomware business, which has witnessed criminals extorting huge sum of money from the users who thought out of fear that the data will be lost permanently if they don't pay.

It is extremely important to help out the authorities by reporting to the law enforcement agencies about ransomware, which enables authorities to obtain overall clear picture, and thereby creating a greater chance to minimize threats. The website of No More Ransom facilitates victims to report a crime by directly connecting to overview of national reporting mechanisms of Europol.

Sadly, after some tests, Crypto Sheriff could not identify various ransomware types like TeslaCrypt v3 and v4, or Jigsaw. The service seems like that it still requires some work, and hence if nothing comes up, then ensure visiting the ID-Ransomware also.
