Russia Reveals It Identified Malware on PCs at 20 Government Organisations

As per the posted statement on the FSB website, it said that it had identified malware "intended for use to spy online on some 20 institutions in Russia". Information technology resources of military and scientific institutions, companies of defense industry, government agencies, and various other entities who are involved in the critical infrastructure are infected.

FSB of Russia said in canned statement that it: "... found evidence of malicious software designed to commit cyber espionage against the computer networks of some 20 organisations located in Russia".

As per the targeted PCs unique characteristics, the malware has been created for each and every individual victim. The malware is made for each individual victim depending on the exclusive characteristics of the targeted PC. It spreads by the targeted attacks that are done on the PCs via emails comprising the malicious attachments.

The security agency says that it loads modules which capture snapshots of the machine owned by victims before customizing more attacks to help in intercepting traffic, turn on and monitor microphones, capture screenshots and keystrokes and drain off a wide variety of set of data.

As per the statement: the analysis observed that the spyware affects information resources of military and scientific organizations, management bodies and public authorities, military-industrial complex institutions, and various facilities of country's critical infrastructure.

Voanews.com posted on July 30th, 2016, stating that intelligence agency of Russia did not reveal the identity of the suspect behind the attacks but the announcement came after recent reports of cyber-attacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) of US and the fundraising committee for candidates of Democratic Party for the U.S. House of Representatives.

U.S. officials and cyber security experts have said that there was evidence of Russia engineered the DNC hack to release sensitive emails of the party in trying to influence the U.S. presidential election. The Kremlin has denied any involvement in this incident.

Russia hardly makes such type of announcements and the timing of this one is also strange. Some may even say that FSB is attempting to say "Hey, we're getting hacked all the time as well, not just the US!".

In a world, where most of the media has blamed Russia as the villain of cyber-space, officials of the country are disclosing that the reality is that every country executed cyber operations secretly is the attacker and the victim also at the same time.
