A Phishing Scam Targeted E-mails of Nurses Union

Email address of thousands of members from nurses' union are leaked following the scam attack over the organization. The NZNO (New Zealand Nurses Organisation) claimed that almost all its 47,000 members are affected.

One person posing as chief executive, Memo Musa, by using a forged email address of yahoo, contacted the NZNO on November 1st, Monday, and then requested for email addresses of members. Sadly, these addresses were released to him.

Jane MacGeorge, temporary Chief Executive, is in touch with the members to offer advice and information. Ms MacGeorge says that NZNO admit this breach of privacy is highly unfortunate and disturbing for members.

Scoop.co.nz posted on November 3rd, 2016, quoting Jane MacGeorge as saying "we have firstly apologised to our members and have started an investigation into how this happened and are working to prevent this from happening again."

The breach of data occurred on Tuesday because of the phishing scam, used to collect information by convincing recipients to believe that they are replying to a genuine request. The union says that Yahoo was requested by the Department of Internal Affairs to close the bogus email address.

The union added that we are recommending our members as well as staff to remain vigilant before opening the yahoo address emails, and to ask whether the email that was received from the NZNO address seems correct and also not to open any attachments or links if there is any doubt.

They also said that, we are also working very closely with Office of the Privacy Commissioner as well as ID Care to assist in supporting the members for keeping the email safe and minimize this problem. They have also met with Department of Internal Affairs, NZ Police Cyber departments and Ministry of Health.

It has been communicated to the district health boards chief executives, and worked with organization of general practitioner to provide this news about breach of email addresses to health sector and are suggesting them to be careful.

NZNO is constantly offering a top level service to its members, as well as doing its best for ensuring that this unfortunate error never happens again. For this, it is further updating its own website with additional advice regarding ways of blocking SPAM and how to remain careful from phishing emails.
