Companies in Connecticut State are being Warned of Fraudulent CEO E-mails

Tax Commissioner Kevin Sullivan of Connecticut has cautioned about an e-mail fraud targeting human resource wings of companies that are receiving a fake electronic mail coming from the chief executive officer (CEO) of those companies. By now many human resource and payroll staffs have been deceived into divulging confidential information to the cyber-crooks. The information includes employee names, their income details and Social Security Numbers. With these details, the cyber thugs thereafter tried filing bogus returns so as to get tax refunds. Ctpost posted this online dated January 30, 2017.

It is said the e-mail scam has been designed for capturing sensitive information about employees of the targeted companies thus causing the former much damage.

Within one release published soon after, Sullivan stated that the scam was certain phishing variation that was called spoofing and the e-mails involved known as spoofed messages. The spoofed e-mails would have say, the company CEO's real name lending a sense of credibility to the e-mails.

Within the above described variation the chief executive supposedly dispatches one e-mail to the human resource officer or the payroll department of the company requesting for an employees list along with other information such as Social Security Numbers.

It's thus being warned that irrespective of how formal an electronic mail asking for SSNs or W-2 might appear, recipients of the e-mail mustn't reply devoid of verifying its authenticity. This way one can avoid getting scammed. Connecticut State got notified that the fraud was circulating nationwide yet again after already doing once before.

The scam e-mails could be requesting any of the following information:

The 2016 W-2 (PDF) of each and every individual employee of the company as well as a summary of the earnings that the company's W-2 staff gets to make one fast review.

The latest employees list containing complete details such as name, residential address, birth data, remuneration and Social Security Number.
