Davidson County Schools declares being Victimized with Phishing Scam


Davidson County Schools (DCS) was recently targeted with one phishing scam wherein the schools' several employees were victimized, the institution confirmed. Press release from DCS suggests that officials of the school system came to know that while the scam continued crucial personal information such as SSN (social security numbers) of independent contractors and employees got hacked. Moreover, the scam had targeted country wide school districts utilizing school officials' names. The-Dispatch.com posted this, February 1, 2017.

On becoming aware of the hack, DCS officials instantly informed area law enforcement as well as the office of N.C. Attorney General. It's not clear what number of district employees became impacted. One news release indicates that the Sheriff's Office for Davidson County has started an investigation into the phishing scam.

Employees got one e-mail notifying them regarding what all details got accessed while asked them for filing their returns for 2016 at the earliest.

Employees as well got the IRS contact number for obtaining extra guidance and information as well as for preventing any fake tax return getting submitted.

Authorities have established one call center for getting answers to any query while an identity protection facility for 12 months has been offered to the employees. DCS has mailed one notification letter along with the phishing e-mail to each and every employee. The notification letter contains relevant information and other resources.

In a memo employees are assured that to adopt precaution for all impacted with the incident, Equifax has been asked for safeguarding their identity over a twelve month period free of cost. However, any ensuing cost owing to the service will accrue to Davidson County Board of Education.

The DCS release states that the school district employees' and associates' data was being maintained in highest confidentiality while the school district apologized for an anonymous intermediate party committing the criminal activity as also the problem it had brought unto every individual affected. The school district would keep on coordinating with agency of law enforcement as well as other external agencies while investigation went on. Further action would be enforced for stopping any likewise future happenings.
