WikiLeaks – CIA Hacked Apple iPhones in Ways Users Can’t Fix

As per WikiLeaks claims, CIA had discovered a way of intercepting and hacking the Apple iPhones, only one year since smartphone of the company comes into the market. WikiLeaks group further claimed that CIA has infected the Mac computers also. But according to experts, it is extremely unlikely that the Mac or iPhone was affected.

Security experts told that exploits are plausible, however they are posing little threat to the normal users. They claim that most tricks are older - for instance, iPhone hack involves 2008 3G model. Also, the techniques typically need physical access to the devices, something CIA would use for the targeted individuals only.

Apple told that initial assessment of WikiLeaks documents reveals that the "alleged iPhone vulnerability affected iPhone 3G only, and was fixed in 2009 at the time when iPhone 3GS was released." Apple also added that alleged exploits of Mac which was described by the WikiLeaks are fixed in all the Macs that were launched since 2013.

The CIA has referred The Post to a previous statement that refused to make comment on the correctness of WikiLeaks information, however denounced disclosures "designed to damage the Intelligence Community's ability to protect America against terrorists and other adversaries."

Jeff Pollard of Forrester Research, security and risk analyst, said that the documents provide an unusual glimpse in the world of contemporary espionage. Chicagotribune.com posted on March 26th, 2017, mentioning Jeff Pollard as saying that for Apple as well as the other companies, it further shows that it is extremely difficult securing products all the way from factories to the customers.

Jeff said the most worrying part is this highlights, that it does not matter how much secured you have kept the device. He added that, "you have to understand that there could also be something that gets delivered to you in a device that you purchased."

Apple told that it hasn't "negotiated with WikiLeaks for any information", and the organization has been instructed to present the information through the normal processes. As per statement of the company, so far they haven't received any kind of information from them which is not in public domain. They are further added that "we are tireless defenders of our users' security and privacy, but we do not condone theft or coordinate with those that threaten to harm our users."
