Hack into Blackburn High School Data Results in Online Leakage of the Same

Blackburn High School encountered a PC hack which has resulted in families' personal information such as addresses, phone numbers and even Medicare details getting published on the Internet visible to the whole world.

The very big security breach is under police's investigation. The school, which became wary of it on 19th May, coordinated with Department of Education fast enough so parents could be cautioned of the incident. Parents also received fraudulent e-mails during the hack, with the messages posing as communication from Blackburn High School principal.

Lito Vilisoni, senior media official from Department of Education (DoE) stated that while the investigation continued, nothing was clear about the hack's origin.

Blackburn High School realized on May 19 about someone accessing the data and then putting it up onto one or more sites of file sharing. The data also contained information about existing and former students. The school subsequently informed police as well as secured its machine. One affected parent said that the electronic mails directed parents towards providing their credit card information onto a supposed website of the high school. Au.news.yahoo.com posted this dated May 24, 2017.

People have been assisted in safeguarding their information via one freshly established call centre which provided the required information. A month earlier during April, secret details were put up onto the department's online site that identified students who'd been made to harm themselves alternatively had been bullied to the extent of disclosing their medical records.

The blunder affected a maximum of 115 families when numerous submissions were posted on DoE's online site.

And while it might be considered that the privacy breach at Blackburn was a well-organized assault it can be said that it occurred after one disturbing trend wherein fraudsters pretend to be trustworthy businesses and institutions of Australia trying to acquire personal information along with credit card particulars of victims.

Department of Education said it was with the school's anxiety regarding the illegitimate access to data, while it put its efforts during the weekend for determining the way it occurred as well as for supporting parents and students impacted with the event.
