Site of Latin America with Bitcoin Tripping Hacked – 28 Million Users

Taringa, a Latin American social site, often called 'Latin America's Reddit', has suffered enormous breach of data of users. Login details of almost all users of the site were compromised.

The social site had formed a system in 2015 to pay users for producing content by using Bitcoin. The site combined with Xapo to produce digital wallets for producers of content and then started funding them with Bitcoin to participate.

The balances in the wallet of the individual users might be low but the enormous hack of data might well permit access to those wallets. The original payments which remained intact might be of some considerable value with the dramatically increased price since 2015.

This was discovered when the LeakBase, website of data breach notification, took control of database of Taringa. Once scanned, then it was established that 28,722,877 total records are collected from the website comprising email addresses, usernames, and their passwords hashed with MD5 algorithm cracking.

As per present on-site statistics of Taringa, the platform's registered users are 28,512,139 that indicate theft of a whopping 100% records from the site by unidentified attackers. Hackread.com posted on September 4th, 2017, stating that it is not clear how LeakBase collected the database, and who actually was behind this act.

The Hacker News, having a slice of 4.5 Mn records, reported that users of impacted Taringa confirmed that records were linked to personal profiles. However, the outlet did not elaborate on actually how many people confirmed by it were included in the leak. A notice posted on the website of Taringa announced that this incident happened on 1st Aug. 2017.

LeakBase, in a discussion with The Hacker News, claimed that they already have cracked 93.79% (26,939,351) of stolen passwords in which 15 Mn are unique. In the data, majorly used emails domains were based on @Gmail and @Hotmail; and the majorly used passwords were America, 12345678, metallica, Taringa, Musica, Carolina, etc.

LeakedSource, a similar breach notification website, published some of the major known leaks till date last year. Major leaks from well-known online platforms affected MySpace, Yahoo, Dropbox, LinkedIn, VK, Rambler and more.
