Mumbai Cyber-crime Police Investigates into State OSD’s Complaint

A particular case of cyber-crime filed 2 months back is currently a political issue following Mumbai's crime cell sending out twenty notifications to Maharashtra based activists and journalists telling them they require answering an enquiry by the crime cell. Although police officials assert that summons to journalists were solely to treat them as witnesses, various social media messages and pictures on September 22 indicate that cops had especially been strict with individuals who acted critically of Maharashtra government. In a statement dated September 22 by Mumbai police, certain people were making false claims across the social media sites.

The case registered back during June was from Nidhi Kamdar who served as OSD (officer on special duty) to Devendra Fadnavis chief minister of Maharashtra state, because someone had allegedly created a fake profile of hers on Facebook. Consequently, 31-yr-old Mahadev Balgude residing in Baramati and associated with the case was detained August 19. Ms. Kamdar complained against Balgude for starting one Facebook profile pretending to be some Dev Gaikwad and setting up a different A/C in her name. Apparently, he devised certain false conversation between the 2 counterfeit profiles discussing money deals, citing that they were initiated on behalf of the CM.

Since last few days, Mumbai Cops have been dispatching notifications to several persons telling they should depose during the probe being conducted into Nidhi Kamdar's complaint. More than 25 persons are going to face the police's inquiry, it is reported. Indianexpress.com posted this, September 24, 2017.

Moreover according to one senior police official, a particular journalist's investigation was started following the knowledge of his interactions with Gaikwad. The official said that the summoning to the journalist was done not as him doing any offence but as a normal person.

Meanwhile, NCP and the Congress criticized the government claiming it stifled dissenting voices. To this effect, people tweeted against the government. Although according to the police, it was as part of the investigation that the notifications had been issued, many alleged that the notices were served only to people who criticized the BJP ruling party in the Union as well as the state.
