Clarksons, The Shipping Firm? Another Victim of Ransomware

Clarkson is a world-renowned shipping company working since 1852. They are warning customers who might have been victimized in ransomware, though the total number of customers affected is not clear.

The Clarksons, the shipping organization has succumbed to a serious ransomware attack that could bring about the disclosure of secured information, the organization warned today.

This morning Clarkson informed about the attack in a statement to the Stock Exchange of London. Hackers have stolen company's secured information and threatened to disclose it if they refuse to pay the ransom, they said.

Although Clarksons has decided not to give the ransom and has alerted shareholders and clients accordingly. As per the post on V3, dated 29/11/2017, problems of IT security are always taken care seriously by Clarksons and they keep on investing for further improvement in system and policy it has set-up.

After this attack, at the beginning of this year, the Company is preceding with a more extensive survey of cyber security, like setting-up the launch of several additional IT security methods. It is determined, though the attacker hasn't affected their daily business and is finding a way to guarantee such an occurrence never repeat. But the share cost has fallen by 2%.

The problem of IT security is at the cutting edge of numerous business plans in the present business and technological sphere and in spite of their extensive efforts they have suffered from such criminal attack, as said by Andi Case, the CEO of Clarksons.

He added, with expert police team and data security professionals they are trying to understand the matter in a better way and the steps should be taken to protect the customer's details now and further.

They are trying to share what they actually learned from this with the clients so that this doesn't repeat. However, they believe their clients realized that they would no longer be blamed for the ransom they asked for and they want to apologize for the problem occurred during this incident, he said.

It is anticipated that this was an attack of either spear phishing or phishing that might have been avoided with advance security consciousness training.
