SamSam Ransomware Assaults Likely to Rise against Indian Enterprises Soon

India now appears as being hackers' lucrative target. Sophos, the Internet security solutions firm is advising enterprises across India for escalating vigilance vis-à-vis cyber assaults, as it reports about the SamSam ransom software which netted nearly $6m through attacks against individuals and organisations worldwide. India too lost substantial money to SamSam's controllers quite from the time the malware made its debut during December 2015.

SamSam's encryption, unlike the conventional ransomwares', is thorough making both work as well as personal data files inaccessible. And not just them, but it as well renders all software that are unimportant for Windows operations, unusable even as these aren't regularly backed up. The mode of attack by SamSam is unique because it's a manual technique; therefore attackers can use evasive tactics against a large number of security tools. Anytime the encryption procedure gets interrupted, SamSam in totality cleans off all its traces instantly, thereby causing obstacles to security investigations. Moreover, regaining after the assault likely depends on reinstalling and/or re-imaging computer programs, along with requiring restoration of backups. With the effect, plentiful victims couldn't regain enough else sufficiently fast for making sure business continued, while were compelled towards making the ransom payment.

Another thing Sophos states is that whilst 74% of all victims of SamSam ransomware have their bases inside USA, rest are spread in many other regions, notably UK (8%), Belgium (6%), Canada (5%), and Australia (2%), in that order. Furthermore according to the report, India together with some more countries was on Rank No.6 on the list of most victimized countries globally.

The cyber-security company as well indicated within another survey about 90% of the organisations within India being either targeted alternatively apprehended as being future targets of ransomware. Besides, Sophos anticipates that there will be a rise in cyber assaults against Indian enterprises soon, with the SamSam ransomware as a possibility.

Global Malware Escalation Manager Peter Mackenzie with Sophos stated that the trend of ransomware assaults possibly would escalate in India; therefore, now was the time when individuals and organisations in India needed bringing into line their cyber safety measures for defence against such assaults.
