Instagram Falls Prey to the Hacking Attack

A widespread campaign by the hackers has hit Instagram, which seems to have affected several users. The hacking attack has proved fatal to the users as they were unable to get an access to their Instagram accounts. Mashable has reported that the number of users who are not able to login to their Instagram accounts is rising continuously.

Due to the hacking, the attempt made by the users to login is failing. When the user is requesting for resetting the password and for recovery emails, several users reported that email addresses through which their Instagram accounts are linked was modified to .ru domain. Though it is not known who are behind this hacking attack, the .ru domain indicates that the hackers have a Russian origin or are pretending as if they are from the same country.

Instagram account names, passwords, profile pictures as well as email addresses associated with user accounts have been changed by attackers in the hack. Amongst the affected accounts, many users' profile pictures were replaced by the stills from popular movies like Despicable Me 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean, as per the post of August 15, 2018, on independent.co.uk.

The Instagram spokesperson was not available immediately for any comment, however acknowledgement of this issue was tweeted by the company on August 15. The company tweeted that "we are aware that some people are having difficulty accessing their Instagram accounts. If you think you have been impacted, please follow our guidance to regain access."

Instagram's official guidance to regain access of the hacked account said that notification of any change in the email address of their account will be sent, in the original email address, to the users of Instagram.

In one of the blog post, Instagram has also replied to the complaints. The guidelines state that "please click the link marked 'reverts this change' in the email, and then change your password." Instagram also suggested having a strong password by combining a minimum of six numbers, punctuation marks and letters. They also added that the passwords should be unique and diverse from the passwords that the users use for logging into their different accounts.
