Hacking Remains the Top Breach Type in July

 

Amongst all the incident of breaches, hacking tops the chart again in the month of July this year. Out of all the breaches identified, hacking represents a whopping mark of 42% in July, which is 6% more than that of the statistics shown in June. Of all the hacking breaches in the month of July, phishing attacks represent 42%.

 

As per the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center and Providence, R.I.-based CyberScout (formerly IDT911), out of all the breaches that were caused due to hacking, ransomware comes second after the phishing attacks representing 25% of the attacks in July. Ransomware attacks, however, were down by 12% from the month of June.

 

After hacking, the second attack that was identified as most common is 'unauthorized access' that represents 28% of the total breaches happened in July. However, unauthorized access attacks has experienced a 5% fall from the previous month. Employee error/negligence/improper disposal/lost exposure come third, amongst all the incident of breaches that were identified, representing 14% of the attacks. From 7% in the month of June, the attacks have been doubled in the month of July. The fourth rank goes to 'accidental exposure' that represents 13% of the total identified breaches that took place in July. It has increased 2% from the previous month.

 

In terms of industries which are affected by breaches in the month of July, business sector again finds the top spot in the list. Though this sector experienced a 9% drop in its figures from the month of June, the overall incident of breaches faced by the business sector is 38% in July. The second in the list is the 'medical/healthcare sector' representing 31% amongst all the incident of breaches that were identified in the month of July. However, the figure shows a 6% decrease as compared to the figures of previous month. The third rank goes to the 'government/military sector' that represents 13% of the total identified breaches that took place in July. The figure shows a rise of 10% from the month of June. Educational sector finds the fourth position in the list with total identified breaches of 10%. The figure shows a rise of 5% from the month of June.

 

In the month of July, business sector, educational sector and medical/healthcare sector were affected most by hacking in terms of industry representing 52%, 44%, and 37% of the breaches respectively.
