Bad News for Healthcare - One out of every 50 emails has a Malicious Link

The latest study from Mimecast, an email security company, shows that many of the security systems were unable to detect the malicious links in the emails. One out of every 50 emails was contained with a "malicious" link - which means they are prone to a malware or phishing attack - and they got through the cybersecurity systems. A cybersecurity firm, Mimecast Limited, conducted study of over 142 million emails, and flagged 203,000 malicious links out of 10 million emails.

The report further found an 80% rise in the impersonation attacks as compared to the figures of last quarters'. Moreover, 15,656 malware attachments, 13,176 emails contained with dangerous file types, and 19,086,877 spam pieces were missed by these security providers, and these got delivered to the inboxes of the users as posted on August 28, 2018, in betanews.com.

Matthew Gardiner, Mimecast cybersecurity strategist, said in one of the statement that "targeted malware, heavily socially-engineered impersonation attacks and phishing threats are still reaching employee inboxes. This leaves organizations at risk of a data breach and financial loss".

Though the healthcare sector is not the only one which is facing these threats, they occupy a special place for the hackers. One of the reason behind this as per experts is the medical records were sold for more money, than the credit card numbers or any other sensitive data, on dark web. A successful and effective cyberattack could bring down the healthcare systems, thus affecting everything from medical devices to EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems that can harm care. Due to this, the hackers working for the enemy nations targeted the healthcare institutions in cyberwarfare.

Falling prey to a ransomware or phishing attack by not taking any measures against them is fetching up a huge price to the healthcare organizations. Several healthcare companies, every month, are reporting to federal government regarding data breaches that results in rise in financial costs as well as reputational harm. Thus, the organizations are required to improve their cyber resilience tactics for email by practicing the multi-layered approach.

Mimecast gives a befitting answer to the cyberthreats in inbox by providing its solutions. Due to healthcare's web of regulatory requirements, the experts stress on the necessity of following a multipronged approach to be adopted by the in-house cybersecurity employees before any attack takes place.
