Faculties and Staff of Chapman got Affected by the ‘Critical’ Phishing Attack

As per the Chapman's Vice President, Strategic Marketing and Communication, Jamie Ceman's email, above 20 faculty and staff members of Chapman have noticeably been affected by the security breach that can be termed as 'critical', in the form of phishing attack as of 4 October 2018. The email was sent by the Vice President throughout the campus in the afternoon of 4 October.

The security breach happened because of opening a phishing email by several faculty and staff members, and simultaneously accessing a malicious web page by using their official Chapman logins. This allowed the hackers to gain the access to the university accounts of faculties and staffs (whoever opened the emails and access the malicious web page). In the process, three of the employees' bank information was changed, and their paychecks were rerouted to the hackers' account.

Ceman further stated to The Panther that the security breach was discovered on 3 October 2018. "We were able to contain it, they believe, right away. They're digging into the impact of that," Jamie Ceman said of IS&T (Information Systems and Technology) looking into the matter. He also affirmed that the affected employees will certainly be compensated for their paycheck by the university. However, Ceman did not reveal any names of the staff or faculty members who were affected, and added that the attack was not targeted to any one specific department.

As per the Chapman's website, there were minimum of 2 phishing emails that talked about employee payroll circulated within Chapman community in the mid to end of September. "Because of the nature of the phishing attack, it was going after payroll," said Ceman. "It wasn't targeted at students, but (IS&T) is doing their due diligence to make sure that the student accounts are secure".

After 20 August 2018, the latest phishing emails that impacted Chapman community are Subject :: Subject: IT Notification; Subject :: New Message; Subject :: FW: Zero Tolerance Policy From President Danielle C.Struppa; Subject :: Help Me Please and Subject :: 2018 Payroll.

As per the website of IS&T, universities nationwide seen an enormous increase in the successful phishing email attacks. This year in March, around 320 Universities in 22 countries became the targets of hackers who are working on the behalf of Iranian government, as per the Deputy Attorney General of the U.S. Out of those 320 targeted universities, more than 140 universities are located in U.S.
