Notice about a recent data incident provided by Meridian Community College

Meridian Community College (also known as MCC) has been providing notice about a recent data incident that might have affected the personal information privacy of some individuals.

In late Jan. 2019, MCC learned about a phishing incident resulting in compromise of some user credentials. The MCC immediately started reviewing that incident and began an investigation that included working with the third-party forensic investigators, so as to confirm the scope and nature of this activity. On Apr. 12, 2019, the investigation has determined that it cannot rule out access of some employees' email accounts. Moreover, the forensic investigation also cannot determine whether particular emails in the possibly affected accounts were subjected to unauthorized access.

Thus, as a precautionary measure, MCC working with the third-party forensic investigators reviewed all the emails as well as attachments in the possibly compromised email accounts for determining whether those emails as well as the attachments contain any kind of sensitive information. This reviewing got concluded on Jun. 25, 2019. The MCC then identify the contact information of those individuals whose information was present there in the affected email accounts.

The information that was present in the possibly compromised email accounts varies by person to person, but might include the name, driver's license number, Social Security number, username and password, date of birth, passport number, health insurance information or medical treatment information.

MCC after learning about this incident quickly took steps for confirming security of their email systems, and has also reset passwords of all the email accounts.

Although the MCC is not aware about any actual or attempted personal information misuse in relation to this incident, it is providing the possibly affected individuals notification out of an abundance of caution.

The possibly affected individuals can look for information about the ways to protect against possible identity theft as well as fraud by reviewing "Steps You Can Take to Protect Personal Information" that MCC is providing on their website www.meridiancc.edu

The individuals having questions regarding this incident can also call the dedicated assistance line of MCC at 1-833-680-7832 in between 9:00 am to 6:30 pm Eastern Time from Monday to Friday.
