Turkish Hackers Use Dutch Websites For Political Reasons

In Turkey, some politicians who enrolled themselves as candidates were eliminated from the list because they did not recognize Armenian genocide. As a protest against this, a group of Turkish hackers sent their message on numerous Dutch websites that they hacked including 'Zinloosgeweld.nl' and a 'Chess Union website'. NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch newspaper reports that the Turkish group of hackers, 'Ayyildiz Team' has also hacked a Kurdish website, 'Azady.nl'. The hackers have released pro-Turkish quotes on these websites and have also shown burning of Dutch flags. The protests against removal of three Turkish politicians resulted in intense criticism from the Turkish government.

According to the website of 'Ayyildiz Team', it is the only 'cyber army' of Turkey. The organization proposes to continue its battle for its fatherland. A general who heads the militaristic organization masterminds various operations. The team calls to combat any form of attack on the Turkish republic that can jeopardize Turkish unity. So they hack websites to spread their message. While they attack websites hosting objectionable Islam, satanic or pornographic substance¸ they support all websites advantageous for Turkey.

Prior to hacking 'Azady.nl', the team received e-mail threatening to spread propaganda against Turks. As a result, the website was hacked. But there was no report of alteration and modification of the website to Turkish language. The Turkish hackers are believed to be working from both Holland and Turkey.

A Turkish daily, 'Hurriyet' reports that the hacking group comprises of students and security experts, mostly males aged between 18-35 years. Before launching any operation, the experts in the team practically form a hierarchy with rankings, like colonel and lieutenant colonel that are individually assigned duties, confirms 'NRC Handelsblad' opinions.

These Turkish hacks seem to acquire inspiration from the political hacks that were prevalent during the war between Israel and Hizbollah. There are expectations of more such hacking attacks against Kurdish websites soon. A hacker of websites can be imprisoned for a year. 'Zinloosgeweld.nl' is seeking to take legal action but since the Turkish hackers operate mostly from Turkey, the results may not be substantial. Therefore, protection and update of sites are the only options to prevent such attacks.
