Korean Duo Indicted For Sending 1.6 Billion Spam Mails

Two computer programmers of South Korea have been held for allegedly breaching the commerce law of the country. The two miscreants, one aged 26 and another 20, are suspected to have sent out unsolicited e-mails during September & December last year. They are suspected to have sent out 1.6 billion spam mails, said the police on 30 January 2007.

Sophos, world leader in developing solutions for integrated threat management, welcomed the news of the detention of the culprits of one of the biggest hoax in South Korea.

12,000 Internet users in South Korea, who answered their spam mails, are supposed to have been victimized by the deed of the two. The hoaxers first stole their personal & financial data and then sold it to moneylenders for $106,400, revealed the police.

Graham Cluley - Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos - in a statement published by Net-security on 30 January 2007 said, Sophos' recent report on security threats has confirmed South Korea as the 3rd worst nation in relaying spam throughout the world. Inboxes are being battered by the scammers who pull out all the stops to make quick money, sell out fake goods, and worse still steal the identities.

The police said that further evidence against the two, who weren't named, would be turned to the prosecutors who'd then seek legal penalties against them.

Cluley went on to say, "South Korea has received worldwide appreciation for the impressive Internet infrastructure it has. But, the growing adoption of Internet connections has brought in the danger of associated threats namely the spyware, malware, and spam e-mails. The court in the country must let the abusers know that their disobedience won't be tolerated any more."

According to Reuters report, a police spokesman divulged that this type of scamming is causing severe problems in the country and the two men are a part of perhaps the biggest scam reported in the country so far.

In May last year, a man, allegedly running a network of compromised PCs, was held by the authorities of South Korea for sending out 18 million spam emails per day.
