Voters Find Exercising Their Vote Is Not So Easy

Voters have another reason to worry about, as hackers make their way into the voting machines.

Harri Hursti, computer scientist from Finland, on 30 March 2007 testified, before blue ribbon committed, which was appointed by the supervisors of Riverside County, that a even high-school student can easily breach most of the election systems, Thedesertsun published this on 31 March 2007.

Harri Hursti is the one who was successful in tampering with a voting machine of Diebold in the HBO documentary "Hacking Democracy".

Hursti explained that there's a program that could be modified on memory card. And by pre stuffing or modifying the ballot with positive and negative loads and by modifying the program to conceal the fact any one may make the machine to discount, as Kesq published on 31 March 2007.

Nearly 40 people attended the meeting of election review committee in Palm Desert. Riverside County Board of Supervisors had appointed this committee for reviewing the issues related to the elections in November 2006. The focus of the review was the problems with the electronic voting machines of the county, which resulted in long queues at polling booths and delays in results' announcement.

Voters worry that their votes were wasted due to this.

Debra Bowen, Secretary of State, is going to conduct a review of state's all electronic systems, which is quite an unlikely thing being done so far, said Hursti.

Many city clerks from Coachella Valley told the members of the committee that the problems with the elections in November, i.e. the long queues and shortages of paper printout, have shown the lack of preparedness.

Husti said prior to the event that no security solution would be available for 3-5 years.

The entire system assumed the poll-worker to be completely honest, said Hursti. But the silver bullet should be something where no one should be trusted on.
