MySpace to Provide Data to Help Reduce Online Crime on Young Adults

Officials of local law enforcement hope that MySpace will cooperate with Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann in sharing information about sex offenders to have more effective control on sex predators.

The company owning the social networking site consented on Monday May 21, 2007 to supply data relating to registered sex offenders it identified and eliminated from its website. Urbancitizen published this in news on May 22, 2007.

On Thursday, a man from Dayton was legally accused of serious criminal charges. It only shows how frequently computer crimes targeted children and young adults, as per chief deputy Brent Emmons of the Office of Champaign County Sheriff.

In another instance, on Tuesday May 22, 2007 the Peachtree City Police jointly with the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and Henry County Police arrested Christopher Todd Walker. Myfoxatlanta published this in news in the second week of May 2007.

According to authorities, Walker got in touch with an undercover officer on the Net whom he mistook for a young girl about 14-years old. Walker conducted illicit sexual conversations thinking he could sexually engage with the girl.

In the meantime, Emmons said reports and complaints about MySpace were becoming more common. He said they had a detective who conducted the investigations. MySpace and other social sites contained profiles of their users. Predators look out for such profiles to hold offensive conversations with teenage girls and boys, Emmons explained. Urbancitizen published this in news on May 22, 2007.

Emmons said their detective spends a few hours on the workdays of every week to follow up the predators' activities. The detective belongs to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which provides with lot of guidance. The task force also includes Springfield Police. Urbancitizen published this as news on May 22, 2007.

Cyber crime was getting more sophisticated and to eradicate it, the task force required sophisticated technology, Emmons said. The crimes drain on valuable resources so it is a strong challenge to anti-crime experts. Every time a complaint reporting a crime arrives it is the task force's duty to probe it.
