Police Arrests Woman For Uploading Lewd Material On Community Site

Jealous feelings over a boyfriend drove a woman, aged 22, to describe her friend indecently on the Internet. This went so far that the cyber crime cell arrested her on July 6, 2007, as reported by Times of India on July 8, 2007.

The victim, aged 21, lodged a complaint at the cyber crime cell reporting that the girl posted a lewd profile together with her photograph and cell phone number on the Orkut community website.

Soon after the complaint, the cyber crime cell came down with action and caught the woman. They booked her case under Section 67 of Information Technology Act and Section 509 of Indian Penal Code.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, economic offenses wing and cyber cell, Sunil Phulari requested Google and VSNL to track the source of the profile posting.

Both Google and VSNL were able to find the address as well as the node, which they communicated to the cyber crime cell within one day, said Phulari. After Phulari's team located the place, they showed the address to the complainant who confirmed it was her close friend's address. Accordingly followed the arrest of the complainant's fast friend on Friday, Phulari said. Pune Newsline published this on July 7, 2007.

The police said the accused had uploaded the picture and e-mail address of her friend, a Maharashtrian girl on the Orkut web page, describing her as a prostitute. This happened one month back after the complainant came close to the male classmate with whom the accused had fallen in love.

Phulari said there were a number of obscene e-mails and phone calls coming to the complainant after her profile was posted on Orkut. This damaged her public reputation. She even became a victim of hack as the accused intercepted her e-mail password and constantly surveyed her e-mails.

In the meantime, Pune police has called on the Internet community to abandon Orkut and other such websites on account of rising cases of offensive postings and growth of hatred. Also the Pune cyber crime cell has mandated the city's cyber cafes to register their address with the crime branch.
