Report Reveals One in Every 28 Emails in India is Infected

According to a latest survey conducted by MessageLabs, out of every 28 emails delivered in India, one has virus.

With Internet becoming modus vivendi for an increasingly growing number of Indians who rely solely on emails for communication, their PC's constantly stand being exposed to the risk of being infected by a computer virus, with one out of every 28 emails being affected, as per a new report.

According to an August 2007 report by MessageLabs, the leader in email security and management services, India continues to be the most susceptible country as regards virus strikes with one out of 27.8 emails being corrupted. But surprisingly, during this duration, strikes by bulk junk e-mails comprised a mere 29.5% of the overall emails received in India, the report indicated.

The report also detected that there was an increase in emails enclosing links to virtual postcards plus YouTube video invitations. There was an upsurge of new-sprung malevolent sites containing 6,00,000 emails on August 15, 2007, which were circulated just within a day. Due to this most recent StormWorm movement, emails comprising links to malware stepped up to reach 19.5% in August 2007 from a mere 0.5% in July 2007. As per the report, StormWorm has supposedly infected nearly 1.8 Million PCs throughout the world.

The study also discloses the rising number of fresh malevolent Websites emerging daily. During August 2007 alone, around 1,772 such brand-new sites were detected and obstructed daily, a rise of 783 daily beginning July 2007.

The report also divulges that agriculture with 66.9% is the most spammed sector, whereas the least spammed one is finance with 30.5%. In August 2007, amongst all sectors, peak spam movement was detected in the telecom sector where it increased by 22.3% starting July 2007 and allocated the second most spammed rank to the telecom sector due to its surge.

The business support services sector witnessed a major decline, falling by 6.2%. Topping the virus chart in August 2007 was the education sector in spite of a 0.18% drop in virus activity, the report disclosed.
