Man Arrested for Matrimonial Fraud

A man, 31-year old, used the Internet to allegedly deceive 38 women, whom he promised to marry while pretending to be an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) bureaucrat and businessman. Police arrested him on September 17, 2007.

Liyakath Ali managed to wed two girls in Mumbai, one in Tiruchi and one in Nagpur. He had posted an impressive profile on a matrimonial Website by describing himself as an influential and wealthy man. Ali's arrest happened after parents of two young women, each from Erode and Dindigul, complained. They complained that a man had used unethical ways to deceive their daughters and was hiding in north Chennai.

The police discovered that Ali used fictitious names such as Sudhakar IAS, Rajesh Kumar and Sandip IAS. In the name of Rajesh, Ali posed as an Non-Resident Indian living in the UK in one of his profiles. His profile impressed many women who proposed him for marriage, the police said. He even managed to obtain a young lady's passport and Rs.2 lakh in cash telling that he would use them to get her a visa. With the help of the passport, Ali bought a cell phone connection, as per an investigating official.

G. Nanchil Kumaran, Commissioner of Police, issued an order for a probe and a special team under Joint Commissioner (North) M. Ravi and arrested Ali. The police said Ali belongs to Koothapakkam village in Cuddalore district. During interrogation, they found that he was already married to a woman who lived in Cuddalore with their children.

Police confiscated a laptop, a car, several passports and few mobile phones from Ali. Liyakath Ali had a co-conspirator, a travel agent, who was missing after Ali's arrest. Meanwhile, police have spread a net to catch the travel agent.

Tiruchi police registered a complaint against Ali in 2006 for clicking and misusing photographs of young girls who came to an Internet center owned by Ali in Srirangam. The case is still pending trial in court. Under the investigation, the police would enquire providers of matrimony service and phone service that gave Ali a connection.
