China Condemns Hacking Blame

In a response to accusation on China that it attacked U.S. systems, a Chinese military expert said that China is the most badly hit victim of computer hackers compared to any Western country.

Wang Xinjun, a researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences, remarked that China does not point at any nation with the blame of surreptitious intrusion into their computer systems unlike what other countries do. Xinhua news agency quoted Xinjun's comments that AFP published on September 23, 2007.

China has been suffering increasing hacking attacks in the past few years, and is facing dangerous situation regarding information security than any Western nation. But instead of blaming any country, the Chinese government summons all countries for international cooperation in combating Internet crime, added Wang.

The government of China has always been serious about information security and considered cyber-crime as another challenge to the world security. China has established a number of laws to control and safeguard security of computer systems, and has also enhanced its researche in this area.

According to recent reports, attackers from the People's Liberation Army of China hacked into US computer systems that resulted into the shutdown of a system in the office of US Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Some other countries like Germany have reported similar hacking attempts originating from China.

It is rather surprising and strange that although a couple of Website attacks (out of thousands of them) have their links with China, some media and officials randomly blame China for the attacks, Wang said.

Wang further said that strong international cooperation was the most effective manner to combat information security threats. The countries involved should throw aside prejudice and doubts towards other nations, abandon the Cold War attitude, and build mutual trust and consensus for cooperation.

In September 2007, the Guardian reported that Chinese attackers were hacking into the computer networks in the departments of the British government. These disclosures followed after The Financial Times reported in September 2007 that Chinese military had infiltrated a Pentagon army computer network in June 2007. The newspaper also reported that the American officials described it as the most accomplished Internet attack done on the Pentagon.
