Two Cyber-sex Offenders Nabbed in Volusia County

Orlando's Child Predator Cybercrime Unit nabbed two Volusia County men on October 24, 2007. These two men were reportedly looking for children with the intention of having sex with them. The offenders had strolled chat rooms to hunt their victims. However, instead of targets, the men unknowingly tripped upon undercover investigators.

Douglas R. Phillips, 47, is charged with sexually soliciting a "girl" of 14 years after meeting her over a chat room. Mitchell R. Avery, 49, enticed a 13-year-old "boy" online, pledging him sexual graphics, authorities informed. He may land up in prison for 25 years. The prosecution will be carried out by attorneys of the Cybercrime Unit.

An undercover agent with the Cybercrime Unit was approached online by Phillips, who was in the illusion of talking to a girl in her teens. In two weeks of tête-à-tête, Phillips sexually allured the "girl" online, while sending loads of porn images to the 'girl', who was actually the agent.

The law enforcement officers with the Cybercrimes Unit took Phillips into custody with support from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Both the offenders will be charged with soliciting a minor and journeying to meet a minor for sex. Phillips is also accused of sending pornographic pictures. The Attorney General's Office said that the men will be charged under the newly framed Cybercrimes against Children Act.

Experienced Sheriffs investigating child predatory disclosed that Internet predators are aware of the risk of engrossing in sex-chats with children, but their temperament is akin to that of a drug addict.

News-Journalonline published the Sheriff's spokesman, Gary Davidson's words on October 25, 2007, stating that their (child sex-predators) sexual impulses are so strong that it paralyses their thinking to a point where they either tend to downplay the dangers and consequences, or deliberately undertake the risk for gratifying their sexual urges.

Similarly, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office caught in its net a St. Cloud man, Jordan Miguel Martinez, 22, after intercepting an instant message, in which he mentioned his desire to have sex with a 13-year-old nubile.
