Top Malware Affected Cities in US

A US-based computer software security firm, 'Enigma Software', lately carried out a one month history of infections in the 100 largest cities of US and revealed some striking results.

The study claims that New York had unsurprisingly the maximum infections as the city has the majority of computer systems. However, when the share of infections was calculated in terms of percentage of the population of the city, it was found that New York stood at the bottom and Atlanta (Georgia) dominated the list, as per the news published by esecurityplanet.com on June 28, 2010.

Along with Atlanta, other cities with maximum malware infection rates were Birmingham (Alabama), Denver (Colorado), Chesapeake (Virginia) and Madison (Wisconsin).

According to the study, Dallas (#28), San Francisco (#35), Houston (#51), Los Angeles (#63), Chicago (#64), Phoenix (#84), and Philadelphia (#89) were some other important cities that were found to have high infection levels.

In addition to this, the study showed the cities with minimum malware infection rates. They were Jersey City (New Jersey), Santa Ana (California), Detroit (Michigan), Boise (Idaho) and Memphis (Tennessee).

Alvin Estevez, CEO, Enigma Software Group, stated that malware creators have become more refined and the danger they hold to users' system and their private details has increased. He also said that the user should be aware of the place where the malware is causing the maximum harm, reported governmentsecurity.org on June 24, 2010.

Paradoxically, Atlanta, Colorado, California, New York, Virginia, Phoenix, Philadelphia...are names of some major cities that as per another security firm Symantec's Security Response data on cyber attacks and potential malware infections, as well as third-party data on online behavior, like using wi-fi hotspots and online shopping have already been categorized as some of the dangerous cities with regard to the cybercrime in the US.

Lastly, both the studies state that in spite of people's increasing awareness about the technology and the Web, everyone is targeted with some cybercrime when online irrespective of the fact where they live.
