Kaspersky Reveals 72.5% Spam in Total Email Traffic in November 2013

Kaspersky released its spam report for the November 2013 according to which the fraction of junk email (spam) in total email traffic during November, 2013 is 72.5% which is almost 10 percentage points higher than last year (November 2012) which was 62.9% as per stats of Kaspersky.

Maximum maligned attachments were traced in the UK with 12.3% of all mail anti-virus detections traced, which is an increase of 2.4 percentage points over the month with UK overtaking Germany at 11.2% and the USA's, 10%.

As accords to new stats for November 2013, cyber crooks embezzled banking information directly from user's systems. Once downloaded to a user's device, nasty files would then send themselves to all email IDs they could detect on that machine or download and launch files from the net without victim's knowledge.

Spam senders sent loads of malevolent programs camouflaged as voice messages that were located in ZIP archives. For instance, this kind of con involved a letter that appeared to be sent by Skype. The attached archive contained a spyware which stole browser cookies and passwords for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients and email accounts and all information was then transferred to cyber crooks.

In addition to spam, the new report also sheds light on phishing as the ranking of enterprises targeted by phishers didn't change extensively in November 2013.

Categories of enterprises targeted by cybercriminals are ranked based on discoveries made by anti-phishing module of Kaspersky's Lab whenever a user tries to pursue a link not taking into account of whether or not the link is in a junk email or on a phishing website.

Like previous month (October 2013), SNS (Social Networking Sites), 269% whose proportion fell by 1.3 percentage points tops the top three groups led by email and IM (Instant Messaging) Services, 19.2% and Search Engines (16.5%) both with a little advanced percentage weighed against to October 2013.

Financial and E-pay companies (16.1%) lingered in 4th place although the quantity of attacks on businesses in this group is swelling. As per latest November 2013 report, the raise was 0.7 percentage points during November and the share of IT firms (9.2%) increased by 2.2 percentage points in November 2013.
