Spammers Now Turn to Hindi in their Assaults

Unlike ever-before, spammers are circulating spam mails written in Hindi script and/or Devanagri in India, published timesofindia.indiatimes.com in news on May 18, 2011.

Actually starting of May 2011, Symantec the e-security company encountered the above kind of spam mails. While previously junk e-mails were primarily in English language, the new Hindi language spam reveals that spammers currently are looking for specific attack points. So they aren't targeting those who speak Hindi in India alone; however, even those Hindi-speaking people who reside within other countries of the neighborhood, Symantec observes.

Remarking about this fresh, fascinating happening, Senior Manager for Development Abhijit Limaye at Symantec stated that India had forever been attacked with computer viruses and phishing assaults. According to him, the company had detected the latest spam that was utilizing the 'Nigerian' or '419' scam tactics, while aiming at Internet users who spoke Hindi. To cite an example of the above, Rajgopal Rao, Corporate Lawyer based in Gurgaon (Haryana, India) couldn't understand whether he should be elated or not when he got a Hindi e-mail declaring that he had won one lottery, since it actually caused him anxiety. Something similar to the above instance happened with research fellow Parul Kumar based in Hyderabad, according to business-standard.com.

Remarking about the aforementioned problem, Country Sales Manager Gaurav Kanwal of Symantec stated that cyber-criminals could find the Hindi vernacular a nice medium for unleashing assaults given that new Internet users would feel more comfortable when reading in their own language, thus getting hooked too. The instance typically represented an old social-engineering trick wherein no vulnerability within the computer was exploited; however, the attacker fooled the victim to an extent that he'd divulge personal confidential details, Kanwal explained. One more company on Internet security, Kaspersky rationalized that another factor, which might've caused spammers to shift to the Hindi spam, was that Gram Panchayats in general were taking onto the Internet to get news about village administration and farming. At that stage, the end-users turned into easy targets. Business-Standard.com published this.
