AhnLab Cautions about Increase in Geography-Specific Malware Threats

The Security Emergency Response Center of AhnLab the security vendor released a new report for Q1 2011 i.e. January-March 2011 according to which, cyber-criminals are designing certain very familiar attacks in increasing numbers that overcome language hurdles earlier causing hindrances to the success of such assaults widely over different regions. Says AhnLab Inc. the most prevalent online danger comes from computer Trojans and malware specific to different geographical territories. Furthermore, the security company notes that the trend of a common strategy for all attacks is being increasingly replaced with malware of different incarnations for various geographies. During Q1 2011, many countries reported different versions of widely used malware programs like Autorun, Bredolab, Conficker, Sality and Virut.

The malware which spread most widely was Trojan accounting for 53.1% of all malware programs followed with computer viruses at 12.3%, script - 8.4%, adware - 7% and installer - 4%.

In addition, the company notes that the 5 extremely widespread Trojan groups are Win-Trojan/Onlinegamehack, Win-Trojan/Patched.CR, Win-Trojan/Overtls15.Gen, Win-Trojan/Winsoft, Win-Trojan/Agent and Win-Trojan/Downloader.

Meanwhile, bogus anti-virus assaults popularly known as scareware scams keep increasing in sophistication and number, according to AhnLab. Notes the security company that these scareware assaults are currently emerging in a number of languages, while there aren't any limitations in disseminating malware or causing threats to extract money in different language based assaults.

In the meantime, the report further outlines a number of amazing new malware programs of Q1 2011 like multi-language malware, APTs (Advanced Persistent Threats), and malicious programs that manage in evading cloud anti-virus mechanisms. Last, but not the least, the report also elaborates malware that exploit Microsoft security flaws, particularly associated with the software company's Internet Explorer browser and Windows Graphics Rendering Engine.

Conclusively, according to Chief Executive Officer Hongsun Kim of AhnLab, security threats on the Internet are always evolving as well as getting more advanced. As a result, it has now become ever-more crucial in superseding cyber-criminals as well as other online attackers with ever-new security prevention technologies, he adds.
