BBB Warns of Phishing E-Mails Purporting to be from Chase Bank

Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued an alert to netizens that a phishing e-mail is presently circulating online posing as a message from Chase Bank. The e-mail possibly precedes several scams that are anticipated ever-since the data hack at Epsilon, published Eweek.com in news on April 7, 2011.

Importantly, on April 1, 2011, Epsilon an enormous company for e-mail marketing revealed that hackers through their malicious tricks had filched its client databases containing e-mail ids whilst Chase Bank was one among those clients.

Reportedly, in the above instance, online criminals are aiming at Chase Bank accountholders by sending them phishing e-mails that notify recipients to take prompt action else they'll find their accounts terminated. Thus recipients are directed for following a given web-link for accessing their "profile page" where they should update their details.

Remarking about the above phishing messages, Tom Bartholomy President of BBB stated that albeit the e-mail that seemingly Chase Bank sent sounded urgent, users mustn't follow the web-link or provide their Social Security number or bank account details. Eweek.com reported this.

Additionally President and CEO Stephen A. Cox of the Council of BBBs stated that the hackers were attempting at getting the e-mail recipients to reply while input their confidential details, which could eventually result in ID-theft. He continued that it was important that consumers were aware of the typical signs of such fraud e-mails so they could safeguard personal credentials. BBB.org published this on April 7, 2011.

The typical signs referred to include misspelled words or grammatical errors, which indicate that a scam electronic mail is fraudulent. Also most significantly, people should know that genuine organizations such as Chase Bank, in the above instance, won't ever request for users' Social Security number, bank account alternatively user-ID and password over e-mail.

Moreover, the BBB, once again warned netizens that more phishing e-mails too could be doing the rounds since some more companies underwent security hacks such as Capital One, Citi, TiVo, Walgreens, Marriott Rewards and others.

Eventually, it's because of data hacks similar to the Epsilon kind that there's been so much of phishing reported over the recent years.
