Managing Spam Costs British SMEs £2,000

As indicated by a recent report released by a UK based anti-spam firm, ClearMyMail, mainly tackling unsolicited messages transmitted from America that put back small and medium-sized enterprises in the country by about £4.5 Billion in production costs.

As indicated by the report, workers lost two days of their work time in a year sifting through spam emails, with downloading, inspecting and deleting useless messages spending six seconds per message, and thus for small firms managing 10 separate email accounts, nearly 160 hours of work time are put into the tiresome job of ascertaining junk messages land up in the directory for deleted items.

Examining these figures of unsolicited emails and work time lost, Dan Field, Managing Director at ClearMyMail, has a few suggestions for those Internet surfers who are trying to reduce time wasted in managing these spam e-mails.

As per Field, along with the growth of the Net and email, unsolicited e-mails have also developed, which are frequently pushed in a very meddlesome manner. Protecting the firms' computers implies that there are lesser computers that spammers can illicitly exploit to send their e-mails. But, the problem of unsolicited email will continue till sufficient number of people together with those who utilize their PCs for their own use deploy anti-spam software program, as reported by Sourcewire on April 2, 2008.

Field further said that in this manner, spammers would have a very limited set of prospective victims that might make them turn to more conventional techniques of marketing.

Prior to publishing the report, ClearMyMail analyzed those nations that generate the maximum volume of Britain directed junk e-mails, and found US to be in the lead with just below 50% of every junk messages originating from there, followed by Britain, China, France and Germany. The nation generating the minimum of UK targeted spam was Japan with figures showing just below 3% spam being generated.

The inferences drawn by ClearMyMail's report are consistent with those revealed by the leading security provider, Webroot's report, "State of Internet Security: Protecting Business Email" which alleged that large volume of junk e-mail and malware can certainly devastate the computer networks of small and medium-sized enterprises and in a few instances, small nations also, as reported by BusinessWire on April 1, 2008.
