Emergence of Web 2.0 Increasing Security Concerns

On April 29, 2008, VP, Product Marketing, Secure Computing, Kenneth Rutsky at the Interop Conference said that IT professionals and businesses need to boost security technologies and abandon traditional blacklisting models to curb the emerging Web 2.0 threats, as reported on April 29, 2008 by ChannelWeb.

He further added that the landscape of Web 2.0 threat has completely changed from last one year and is completely different from e-mail marketers and script kiddies, selling something to Web users. These threats are target-specific and entirely profit-motivated. The cyber-crime as organized illegal business is increasing at such a high rate that it has crossed level of the drug trade.

CEO, Websense, Gene Hodges, said that many businesses are unprepared for rapidly emerging and expanding Web 2.0 and thus, many Internet sites are exposed to this danger, as reported in second week of April, 2008 by ChannelWeb.

Moreover, a recent report from IDC reveals that communities and applications, such as Business 2.0 and Web 2.0, are likely to become primary source of business data loss, violation of privacy and identity frauds.

Principal Research Scientist, Secure Computing, Dmitri Alperovitch, said that everyday, about 10,000 samples of malware are seen by the company and there number is increasing day by day as several terrorists and organized criminals use Internet for criminal activities, as reported on April 30, 2008 by NETWORKWORLD.

Alperovitch also said that in last few years, perspective of Web criminal activities has significantly expanded, transforming from breaking the computer and hacking into more serious crime.

However, due to introduction of user-based interactivity and content, an increase can be witnessed in number of various malware attacks, like organized malicious code, spyware and trojans botnets, and this increases security concerns.

The multi-faceted threats, which combine Web, application level, insider access, social engineering, and e-mail attacks are developed by the Internet criminals by blending different threats.

Director, information security, Notre Dame University, Gary Dobbins, advised that a user should never trust the Web browser. He also said that he is keen to see that how many programmers make this mistake, as reported on April 30, 2008 by NETWORKWORLD.
