Students’ Information at Arizona State Universities Susceptible to Leakage

The Office of Arizona Auditor General conducted an audit on June 20, 2008 and found grave security weaknesses in the Web arrangements at Arizona's state universities. In one instance, the state auditors could access over 10,000 confidential records containing students' names and Social Security numbers.

The audit was a routine review of performance to determine whether agencies were meeting the state Legislature-established objectives as well as managing the allocated resources effectively.

But, on inspecting, auditors found that poor security allowed them to compromise students' user accounts, installation of malicious programs, and alteration of information. The examination also found that similar weaknesses could exist on several other university Websites where users comm...
