Kaspersky Released Malware Statistics for September 2008Due to the KSN (Kaspersky Security Network) activity during September 2008, two virus rankings were assembled. The first ranking displays the most famous adware, malware and other unnecessary programs, as per the number of systems they discovered containing Trojans, but their share decreased from 80% to 70%. Also, KSN declared that the earlier leader, Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.ech, found nowhere and a completely new and unexpected piece of code acquired the first position. The new leader was discovered as Rootkit.Win32.Agent.cvx. Security experts detected it during August 2008 and it circulated across the net throughout the month. Two factors have caused trouble - firstly, rootkits are weird products for anti-virus programs; secondly, only some of the anti-virus software can detect this specific specimen. Another harmful software, TrojanDownloader.WMA.Wimad.n, acquired second position. This is a multimedia file and exploits flaws in Windows Media Player to install various Trojans. Further, a substantial amount of the attacks on users PC came from several script downloaders, with an estimation of four in September rankings. These scripts have been the cause for many "drive-by-download" attacks. Also, compared to August rankings, which had seen 16 new entries, September's ranking witnessed only 9 new entries. In them, there was a classic old worm of the world of virus Brontok.q holding the 18th position. Moreover, almost 35103 different harmful and unsolicited software were discovered on the user's systems during September 2008. That implies substantial increase in the amount of in-the-wild threats for the 2nd month consecutively as August's figure was at 28 940. Besides, nowadays botnets are consisted of manageable quantities of infected systems that make it simple to control the bots and to use the harvested information. The profit is premised on the amount of victims as well as the extent to which the latest malware is needed. Another popular method used in malware is the sabotage of security software to restrict detection and extend shelf life. Similarly, as per the latest report by Panda Security, adware accounted for 1/3rd of total latest harmful software.
