Sunbelt Software’s Release List of Top Ten Malware for September 2008

Sunbelt Software, a software security firm, announced the list of top ten malware and spyware threats prevalent during September 2008 on October 13, 2008.

According to the report, Trojan.Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec occupies the first position in the top ten list, accounting for 2.76% of total spyware and malware threats registered during September 2008. This Trojan is generally installed via some deceptive modes, and it facilitates downloading of unwanted and harmful software, including malware, adware and spyware, from various sources on internet on to the victims PC

Further, second spot in the list is given to the Trojan named Trojan.FakeAlert for contributing 1.75% of the total malware, while VirtuMonde is placed third with a contribution of 1.31% to the total figure. Trojan.FakeAlert is installed onto the PC without the awareness and permission of user, and is known to perform some harmful and malevolent functions. On the other hand, VirtuMonde is an adware which downloads and shows popup advertisements.

Continuing the list, fourth, fifth and sixth positions are occupied by Trojan.TDSServ, Adware NetAdware.Gen and AntivirusXP 2008 (Winifixer) responsible for 1.20%, 1.04% and 0.85% respectively.

As per reports by Sunbelt, Trojan.TDSServ has entered first time in the top ten malware threats list. Trojan.TDSServ is installed with the rootkit-specific techniques designed to conceal the presence of software in the computer system. This Trojan is deployed to successfully block the access to security sites.

Further, FakeAlert.PCHealthCenter, Ultimate SecuritySuite, Trojan.Win32.Monder.gen are placed at seventh, eighth and ninth place respectively. These three account for 0.75%, 0.72% and 0.72% correspondingly. Finally, the tenth place goes to Trojan.NewMediaCodec that added 0.70% to the total figure.

Moreover, a similar list of Web-threats for September 2008 has been released by security firm, BitDefender that too places Downloader Trojan at first position.

Security experts said that cyber crime is rising at an alarming rate and making use of the latest technologies. Highly professional criminals are continuously engaged in such unlawful activities. Consequently, it has become necessary to be more vigilant and protected while using internet.
