Vietnam – Nearly 4,000 New Computer Viruses Detected in October 2008According to a Vietnam based networks security agency, the BKIS Network Security Center, as many as 3,910 new kinds of PC viruses were detected in Vietnam in October 2008, including 3,905 of global origin and 5 of national origin. Further, the malicious programs attacked over 6.2 Million computer systems across the country during the month, of which the most prevalent one was X97M.XFSic, which infected more than 73,000 systems. The BKIS study also indicates that during October 2008, 50 Websites of major Vietnamese agencies and companies were hacked. Out of them, 24 sites were targeted by Vietnamese hackers and 26 by foreign hackers. Security researchers state that in the world of internet, the dissemination of viruses does not rest on geographical locations. That is why online users in other countries just like in Vietnam are experiencing virus problems of the same nature. Furthermore, the study reveals that viruses are infecting computers with a new method that use deceptive anti-virus software leading to the compromise of vital files relating to the operating software; thus, forcing users to re-configure their systems. Moreover, BKIS counted 92 new kinds of PC viruses in October 2008 that employed the new infection method and attacked 41,600 computers across the country. BKIS also uncovered some grave errors in the Websites of 11 government and business organizations. Apart from this, the security researchers stated that the danger of network and data security breaches is increasing to frightening proportion in Vietnam. The risk is primarily due to investment and expenditure constraints in the IT sector, as well as due to lack of awareness among internet users. Meanwhile, it may be appropriate to mention that BKIS' previous study on PC viruses in Vietnam conducted in March 2008 indicated that the nation was apparently confronting a major internet security crisis. It was revealed that about 95% of its computers were infected with viruses and 40% of its share and stock brokerages were susceptible to online attacks. Also, about 25% of prominent Vietnamese Websites were vulnerable to hackers' attacks, the report said.
