Kaspersky Throws Light on Top 20 Malware for May ’09The anti-virus vendor Kaspersky Lab has recently released its Top 20 malware list for the month of May. The anti-virus vendor has therein mentioned overall 42,520 different advertising, malicious and unsolicited programs found on systems in May 2009, which is marginally up from April 2009. Kaspersky Lab has developed two different lists of Top 20 malware. The first one consists of adware, malicious programs and other potentially unsolicited programs that are most commonly found on computers. The other Top 20 ranking lists the malicious programs that most widely infected the objects found on the users' PCs, comprising mainly of malicious programs potential of infecting files. The anti-virus vendor explained that two newcomers have been featured in the first Top 20 list, viz. Swizzor.a (a Trojan) and Palevo.ddm (a P2P worm). The later one, besides propagating through a wide range of public P2P networks, causes infection to detachable drives. This, in turn, facilitates it in propagating more rapidly and widely. On the other hand, the former one makes use of some sophisticated and interesting concealing tactics and procedures to hide its existence on the computer. Since the servers of cybercriminals generate hundreds of new versions of this Trojan a day, it has been included in both the Top 20 ratings. The firm said that in May, unlike April, the second Top 20 ranking saw more number of changes, such as Trojan-Clicker.HTML.IFrame.aga made it to the third spot this time, while Virus.Win32.Sality.ae shifted towards the bottom of the list. IFrame.aga is yet another variant of the iframe, of which the currently widespread Virus.Win32.Virut.ce makes use for infecting Web pages. Sality.ae is a new variant of the ill-famed Sality virus, which has substituted Sality.y that went out of the Kaspersky's rankings in the month of January this year. Kaspersky added that precisely three members of the abovementioned family have been listed in the Top 20 ranking for yet another time. However the latest version is currently towards the end of the list, the earlier variants prompts the company to believe that it would soon start going up the rankings.
